SOCIO-ECONOMIC DYNAMICS OF POST-SOVIET KAZAKHSTAN

Author

Kuzmina E.M. PhD (Political science), Head, Sector of Economic Development of Post-Soviet Countries, Institute of Economics, RAS

Abstract

It is yet another contribution to a series of articles, devoted to concrete former republics of the USSR, written by associates of the Institute of Economics, RAS. Following an analysis of  post-soviet socio-economic evolution of Kazakhstan, the author draws conclusions that the republic has, on the one hand, achieved greater results than many of its CIS partners (managed to sharply increase hydrocarbon production, create a diversified network of external communications, and cement its position in global economy, come to the level of developed countries in terms of GDP), and on the other, failed to solve a number of social problems and do away with the one-sided, basically commodity economy. It is precisely the above circumstances that determine the key directives in the latest presidential strategy for a period of up to 2020 and for a more distant future, including the ones associated with participation in Eurasian Economic Union
